Traditional games and pastime activities were a normal part of Māori lifestyle. There were many different purposes for each ranging from the teaching of physical skills, as a part of ritual and ceremony, or simply for entertainment.
Community participation with sports and games were common and athletic pursuits were held in high regard. Contests and competitions provided opportunities to refine the skills in games for the eventuality of hand-to-hand combat in warfare.
Games and pastimes were heavily impacted during the latter half of the 19th century. In most areas of the country, they were replaced with a variety of western games which are still enjoyed today.
We have three main games available for you to try. Join us for a quick round of Tītī-tōrea or Kapo Rākau (stick games). Learn how to twirl the Poi (a light ball attached to a cord).
If you’re going to see HĀ: Breath of Life during your visit, notice how these traditional games are reflected in the Aotearoa section of the evening show.
